An early morning garage fire in the back of a Fairfield County home which led authorities to suspect a puppy mill was found to be the home for the family's pets.

The fire took place in Bridgeport around 4:10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 3 at 753 Brooks St.

The Bridgeport Fire Department responding to the structure fire discovered a fire in a garage, which was quickly extinguished, said Scott Appleby, director of emergency management for Bridgeport.

The Fire Marshal arrived on the scene and requested the assistance of the Bridgeport Animal Control Unit due to suspicions of a possible puppy mill at this location, Appleby added.

An inspection of the area found that the area was actually home to the family's pets, Appleby said.

Officials did not reveal if any dogs were injured.

The fire is under investigation.
